As an educator and Professor of Dance my ongoing research area has been the creative process. This interest was sparked not only from a lifetime focus on the artistry of performance and choreography but also from a curiosity that dawned at the early age of ten. Sleeping outside on a warm summer night under a galaxy of stars, a memory remains of watching the vast night sky full of glittering lights and wondering: How does it all work? Is there some great puppeteer above that directs all of life? I wanted to know.
Wanting to know led me to many different sources for information – science, quantum physics, metaphysics, history, art, shamanism, astrology, psychology and more. I found through my research that great mystics to master scientists agree that energy is foundational in the expression of all of life, inherent in everything. This energy is creative
in nature and is interacted with and organized through our thoughts, beliefs and actions.
For thousands of years shaman and other wisdom keepers from around the world have known that energy is the essence of everything. They are fluent with the language of energy and understand the continuous co-creation process at work at an energetic level. With the ability to navigate this mysterious territory of potential and possibility in The Field they are able to serve as an interface between the mystical, energetic realm and the mundane. From the quantum physics perspective, creativity is the phenomenon of our consciousness interacting with the energy in The Field of potential to create new possibilities.
The perspectives of quantum physics and metaphysics met at the level of energy – both understanding that everything, at its essence, is energy expressing creatively. My interest in the creative process as an artist and my interest in the creative process as a curious human crossed paths.

I started to look at myself, and life, from an energetic perspective. I saw the correlation of how inspiration and ideas, coupled with focused intention and supportive action translated into a work of choreography – or a new job, a healthy relationship, a new business idea, the answer to a question. I saw the creative process beyond the field of choreography or the arts and saw it at work everywhere, in all areas of life, at all times. And I saw how the creative process is connected to energy.
What I learned began to shift how I saw myself. As I experienced and understood my self in new ways, I experienced others differently as well. I experienced life, as a whole, from
a different perspective. Physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance and heightened creativity are only a few of the benefits I experienced from integrating my understanding into my daily living.
The creative process is inherent in all that we do – individually and collectively. I have experienced myself, and witnessed in others, the impact when this process is understood and engaged in as an integral part of who we are. It brings a deeper self-awareness, self-responsibility, and permission to imagine beyond perceived limitations to all areas of life.
A sense of personal power and self-worth is enhanced along with the ability to see obstacles as information and part of a natural process of expanding to new horizons or releasing what no longer serves. With this knowledge, life no longer happens to us. Instead we see our self as an integrated, co-creator of our experience. We begin to find purpose, connection and joy with our self and with others. We become the artist of our own life.
